Being ready for a cyber attack is essential for every business, irrespective of size or industry. You need to anticipate how to react should an attack take place.

By having the correct protection and plans in place you can drastically reduce the impact and damage caused during a live cyber attack.

We’ve broken it down into just 4 easy steps to start getting your business cyber ready.

Step 1:

Get your Organisation Protected

The NCSC support the most critical organisations in the UK, the wider public sector, industry, SMEs as well as the general public. When incidents do occur, they provide effective incident response to minimise harm to the UK, help with recovery, and learn lessons for the future. All advice is free to access and will form the basis of everything you need to start becoming protected.

Step 2:

Join the Police CyberAlarm network

Police CyberAlarm is a free tool to help members understand and monitor malicious cyber activity. This service is made up of two parts; monitoring and vulnerability scanning.

It can be seen as a “CCTV camera” monitoring the traffic seen by a member’s connection to the internet. It will detect and provide regular reports of suspected malicious activity, enabling organisations to minimise their vulnerabilities. The data collected by the system does not contain any content of the traffic. The system is designed to protect personal data, trade secrets and intellectual property.

Step 3:

Check your Protection and Get certified

Cyber Essentials is a simple but effective, Government backed scheme that will help you to protect your organisation, whatever its size, against a whole range of the most common cyber attacks.

Cyber attacks come in many shapes and sizes, but the vast majority are very basic in nature, carried out by relatively unskilled individuals. They’re the digital equivalent of a thief trying your front door to see if it’s unlocked. Our advice is designed to prevent these attacks.

Step 4:

Test your Response to an attack

Exercise in a Box is a free online tool from the NCSC which helps organisations test and practise their response to a cyber attack. It is completely free and you don’t have to be an expert to use it.

The service provides exercises, based around the main cyber threats, which your organisation can do in your own time, in a safe environment, as many times as you want. It includes everything you need for setting up, planning, delivery, and post-exercise activity, all in one place.
